Common Questions

If yours isn't here, ask me directly. There are no wrong questions.

01Do you take my insurance?

I am out of network, so I don't bill insurance plans directly. Many plans pay back part of the fee for out-of-network visits, and I give you what you need to ask your plan. I don't bill Medicare or the Oregon Health Plan.

02What is a superbill, and can I use one?

A superbill is an itemized receipt, and I can send one each month. It lists the dates, the service and a diagnosis code, which your plan will see. You send it to your plan, which may pay you back in part. Whether it does is the plan's decision.

03What is a Good Faith Estimate?

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of what your care will cost before you start. I give you one in writing in advance. If a bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

04How much does it cost, and how do fees work?

Your fee is given to you in writing before your first session, and it is the same for each session of the same kind. A limited number of reduced-fee sessions are held; ask when you write to me.

05Can I use an HSA or FSA card?

Usually, yes. Cards for health savings and flexible spending accounts commonly work for therapy sessions. Check your account's rules, and I can send a receipt for it.

06What happens in the first session?

We talk about what you want from therapy and what you would rather leave alone for now. I explain how I work, including what stays private. There is no pressure to share more than feels comfortable. Then you decide whether to continue.

07How often and how long are sessions?

Individual sessions are 50 minutes and couples sessions are 80. Most people start weekly. I don't promise a number of sessions, and we check in about the pace as we go.

08Are you licensed where I live?

I am a licensed psychologist in Oregon. I see clients in person in Portland, and by video when you are in Oregon at the time of the session. I can't see clients who are in other states, and I'm glad to help you look for someone where you live.

09What do I do in a crisis?

This practice is not an emergency service, and messages are not read around the clock. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, any time. In an emergency, call 911.

10What is confidential, and what are the limits?

What you tell me stays private, and I share it only as the law allows. The limits are few: a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, abuse of a child or a vulnerable adult, and a court order. I go through them in the first session.

11Can you see my teen?

No. This practice is for adults, 18 and older. If you are looking for care for a teen, I am glad to help you find someone who works with them.

12What is your cancellation policy?

I ask for 24 hours' notice to cancel or move a session. Life happens, and I will talk it over with you first. A session cancelled later than that may be charged.
